What to expect from your Family Portrait Photo Session
What you can expect from me…
My sessions are pretty casual and relaxed, and usually go for about an hour. I will get a range of photos of you with your kids, the kids by themselves, and you and your partner. Then I pretty much let the kids play and have some fun. I’m very much go with flow because having kids myself I know that kids love to be free, that’s when you get the best, most genuine photos, and if you have any ideas you’d like to add into your session I’m happy to accommodate.
Plan your outfits
Beginning with the most difficult person to dress first. Plan all other outfits around that person, remembering to coordinate colours and patterns as if you were pulling ONE outfit together. Consider the colours in your home when you’re planning your outfits. Your portraits will ultimately hang in your home and need to fit cohesively, reflecting the personality and style of your family. Avoid tops that have writing like Hurley or Quicksilver as these will date your images.
Get Plenty of Rest
Get to bed early and get a good night sleep. Happy children = beautiful portraits. Rested parents = beautiful portraits.
Make sure you eat!
Fill the bellies of all session participants before the portrait session. This is especially true for young children and DADS!
Don’t forget Props!
Bring along any small, meaningful items you would like to incorporate into your session. Eg Teddy bears, skate boards, little blankies, a favourite hat . A picnic rug.
The best photo’s aren’t always posed!
The best photographs are often the ones where everyone is interacting with each other. Not every picture needs to have everyone looking at the camera and smiling at the same time. If you are just hanging out as a family and being affectionate with each other, your eyes will be on your family members and your smile will be natural. These are the photographs that you will love the most because the moments are real.
Don’t be afraid to pick up your children and toss them in the air. Give your wife a kiss on the cheek. Tell your husband how much you love him and appreciate him for being there for your family. Have fun, laugh, joke, hug, kiss, wrestle… . It also allows me to capture your family as themselves however loving/chaotic they may be.
Relaxed families = beautiful portraits
Arrive 10 minutes early to give yourself plenty of time of last minute issues that may arise. We time our sessions for the perfect natural light, so if you are late it will cut into your session time.
