As a professional photographer my business strives to deliver you an amazing photography experience and producing fine art printed products is first and foremost with digital files coming in second to that. I do not offer just digital files packages. You can read why here.
Ask yourself this question:
What is the main reason you want the digital files and not the prints?
You have probably come up with these 4 most common reasons
- So I can share on social media
- So I can have as many copies as I want for cheaper (cheap is not always best)
- So I can play with them in Photoshop or even worse Instagram
- I don’t know what to do with them yet
Let’s go into it in more depth and hopefully by the end of this post, you will have an understanding of the true value of having your images professionally printed to the highest quality as timeless heirlooms to pass down the generations.
What is considered a “photo” today?
In today’s digital age we seem to think photo means digital files.
But back in the days when images were shot on film, did anyone expect to get the negatives from our photographer? No!
It really wasn’t that long ago that we thought photos were the “prints”, and we didn’t ask for the negatives.(digital files)
The Life span of a file
Not too long ago you received your images on a floppy disk, pretty soon it was a CD or DVD, now we have USB’s. These will all be obsolete before we know it. (just think of IPAD’s that don’t have a USB port)
Let me give you a little scenario :-
You receive your daughters newborn photos on a USB. You make sure to put them on your Computer and then you put the USB in a “safe” place.
10 years down the track your little girl wants to see her photo’s of when she was a teeny tiny newborn.
You have a new computer, and your photos are not on there. Panic sets in…
Amazingly you remember where you put your USB, but NO your computer doesn’t have a USB port. ARGH! (just think about IPAD’s and this is 10 years down the track so we have no idea how technology will change)
You had a back up plan – You remember saving them to the cloud
Unfortunately computers in 2030 can’t read JPEG files anymore.
All your beautiful memories are gone forever. Just like that.
Digital File Corruption
Instead of 10 years time let’s talk about about say 6 months after your newborn shoot. You plug your USB into your computer to show your family and you see this.
It looked fine the last time you opened the file, what is going on?
Digital files can get corrupted at any time. Sometimes it’s just little lines, other times much worse like the rainbow image above. On top of that sometimes USB’s just won’t open no matter what you do.
No one really knows the lifespan of a file, but one thing we do know that over time, they are more likely to degenerate and then you will be left with nothing.
The most photographed generation in history could be left with no photos of their childhood.
So let’s discuss your
Top 4 reasons you want Digitals
1.So I can share on social media
I understand that. We have family living interstate who love to see our family photos too. One thing to remember, with any files you share online, it’s safest to share them watermarked so that photography thieves can’t steal them and use them. Also, just because you share them online, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t print them. When people look at your photo’s on a screen, some will look good and some will look terrible, I mean really bad. (not everyone has a colour calibrated screen and this affects how they look)
2. So I can print as many copies as I like for cheaper
So you choose a photographer whose work you love. You invest a lot of time and money on clothing, hair, makeup and an hour or more at your photography session.
You pay your photographer to plan, take and edit your photos to a high professional standard.
You then want to take the digital images on a USB and print at a cheap print kiosk, that print mistoned, discoloured photos or pixelated photos and put these on display in your home? to look at every day?
After all that time and money invested into the family photos, it really doesn’t make sense to print them cheaply and end up with anything less than perfect prints that will last the test of time. Just look at the results from some of the cheaper kiosks of this image below?
Your family deserves the best.
When you order your images from me as a professional photographer a lot goes into producing the final product. Images need to be colour corrected, formatted and prepared to the right size and medium of your finished artwork. The process differs depending on whether you choose Canvas, Wood, Fine art paper, and also what size you are printing.
Once this is all done, they are sent to a professional photo lab.. The professional print labs only source the best grade papers and inks and are guaranteed to look perfect for generations to come. All my product’s have a lifetime guarantee!
The finished results are printed to perfection and of the highest standard, so much so that they will last a lifetime and even come with a 75 year guarantee!
I think we have just covered why making your own copies this isn’t the best choice.
Most photographers will have the option to order more prints for up to one year of any print you have previously ordered so you can always order more prints anytime you need them.
However with the matching digital files included in all my packages, you can print your own photos for Christmas cards etc, but at least you will have the fine art prints to see just how they should look and you can enjoy them in all their beauty.
I take the care to make sure your photos are perfect! Big W and other cheap labs don’t!
If you don’t see the value in print’s, wait till a loved one dies or your files are lost and that’s all you have left!
3. So I can play with them in Photoshop
Really? After spending all that time, money and effort you want to touch them up yourself?
That’s a huge No No!
Firstly it misrepresents the photographer’s work as an artist. Secondly people will think the photographer created the work you have played with, and with apps such as Instagram will ruin the original colours and tones and make it look very cheap.
Respect the photographer you hired to take your photos and edit them to a high standard. Don’t mess with their work.
The true value of a photo is only realised years after it has been taken
4. I don’t know what to do with them yet
You really want this time in your life captured but you don’t have the wall space for a large collection just now?
Here are a few ways to receive all the digital files from your photo session on a USB with matching fine art print products.
Pick your favourite 20 to be printed as 5×7 inch prints in a gorgeous custom made keepsake box. You can keep some, gift some to family, and the matching digital files on a USB
Select 40 of your favourite images to be printed in a Story Book Fine Art Album, that comes with all your digital files on a USB
Technology keeps changing, but a print is for life. Print what your precious memories to be preserved for generations to come.
So after reading through this, please don’t freak out! I am not removing digital files from my packages, because I understand that people do want them.
The purpose of this blog is to help you understand the importance of having your photos professionally printed to the highest standard so that when you walk past them in your home you will feel a warmth and happiness knowing that your investment into your family portraits was worth it as they look amazing on your walls and will last a lifetime!
