If you’re like most people, you’ve thought about family portrait photography but you just haven’t got around to it. Life got too busy, need to have my hair done, roots are showing, when I lose a few more kilos, it’s hard to get everyone together… I have heard it all before, many times. Sadly enough, it just never happens.
Here are three solid reasons family portrait photography should be an important part of your life.
1. Document Growth
All too often we forget about the now because we are so busy building our futures. Our children grow up too fast! In the blink of an eye they are packing their bags and going off to university or college. Just like that the days of the little pitter-patters of feet walking toward the bedroom door to wake us up in the early hours of the morning are gone never to return.
When the children are young, having a portrait of the family done each year is a great way to document their stages and progress during the early years. As children grow up they find their own lives and move away. The days when the family all stayed within a few kilometres of each other are not always guaranteed, due to jobs, study, travel etc. Take advantage of the time you have together while you have it by having family pictures taken by a professional photographer. It’s a sweet reminder of life together.
2. Life Happens
We may not want to admit it but our family circle can change without warning and loved ones may pass on. There’s no reason to squander the opportunity to capture life together now. You never know when that last chance for a family photo will come. Like when my grandparents passed away, we never did get around to having a generational family portrait taken, not even one of them by themselves. I hear of many tragic stories of loved ones dying suddenly and I can guarantee you every photo they ever had taken with them turns extremely valuable overnight.
Pictures in general bring us back in time. Take this picture for example. It was taken on our family Summer holidays a few years ago. Our youngest boy Will was really into wearing caps, as you can see in the photo and Nick was just starting to grow his hair longer, look at his head of curls. We will never forget all the beautiful parrots that came so close to the boys to be hand fed. A precious memory worth keeping, but to be honest if I had not taken the photo, I probably would have forgotten all about those little details of the boys.
Family pictures, or portraits have that same power. They bring us back in time. They’re a great way to reminisce. They are also a part of our heritage. In years to come, grandchildren and great-grandchildren may someday ask to see pictures of the family, and wouldn’t it just be sad if there were few or none to share? Having the pictures in print brings the family together again as they look back on their lives.
Don’t let life pass you by and look back, wondering why you didn’t take the time to have family pictures taken. Don’t make excuses or put it off any longer. You can’t go back in time and recapture it, so avoid setting yourself up for an “I wish” situation.
If you’ve been thinking about having a family portrait taken, do it. Do it for your children. Your children won’t notice the need for a haircut or roots to be touched up, a few extra kilo’s, a smile line or even a fading tan, but we guarantee they will be disappointed when they are older and there are no family photos to share with their children.
My approach to Family Portrait sessions are done in a very relaxed and fun way to capture real moments of your family interacting with each other. The families I work with want natural images with true personality and family connection bursting right out of them. My families want to look at their finished images and say, ‘Yes, these just sum us up perfectly!’
